The Other Side of the Curtain: From Bridal Store Owner to Bride
Hi everyone! Thank so much for stopping by our journal! For this post, Leigh is going to be taking over and telling you about her experience as a new bride. We hope you enjoy, we hope you learn something new about us, and we hope it makes you even more excited to make an appointment to come into Harbor Bridal and find the wedding dress of your dreams!
Hi from Leigh!
For those of you who follow us on social media, you may already know that I got engaged at the end of April (shout out to my fiancé, Greg!), and I officially went from being a bridal shop owner to a future bride. Tori has always been the resident bride at HB (now she’s the resident mama to my favorite little boy Teddy), but for now I am able to take over that title and relate to our brides on a whole new level. So far, I have loved being able to share stories, wedding vendor suggestions, thoughts, and experiences with you lovely ladies who have come into the store, and while I have always done my best to provide the highest level of customer service possible to our brides, I know that over the next few months I will have a vastly different perspective because I (finally!) know what it’s like to go through this process.
With all of that being said, I wanted to share with you my experience picking out a bridal dress. Being the owner of a store that sells wedding dresses, this was (obviously) one of the most important parts of the wedding planning process for me. Luckily for me, we work with the best bridal designer there is! If you’ve been staying up-to-date on our blog posts, you already know that we are a Modern Trousseau flagship store. (Read about what that means here!) While we have worked with Modern Trousseau since we opened in 2014, this is the first opportunity I have had for them to create a gown for me. My experience was slightly different than some of our brides because I decided, after some thought, to wear a custom gown. I love every single wedding dress we carry in our store and would be happy to wear any one of them, but when you’ve been trying on wedding gowns regularly for 4 years, you know you need something a little different for your own wedding! And Modern Trousseau is so amazing at making custom changes to their bridal gowns, I knew that the team would be able to create something unique and beautiful for me to wear on my wedding day.
With my mom and my sister, I drove up to Connecticut on a very rainy Monday to meet with the owner and designer of Modern Trousseau, Callie. Even though I had a general idea of what I was looking for, Callie knew right away what silhouette and what neckline would work for me, and that’s where we started. I tried on a gown that had the basic elements that we had decided on, and we made custom changes from there. As you can imagine, I felt a lot of pressure about having the “perfect” gown and was a little nervous for my appointment, but I shouldn’t have been. The second I put on the gown, and we started playing around with colors and fabrics, I felt completely at ease. I knew in that moment that Callie and the team at Modern Trousseau were going to stop at nothing to create the perfect gown for me. Callie made suggestions while offering so many different options for me, and when we finally had it perfect, I had “the moment” that all brides wait for. I wasn’t sure it was going to happen for me (I look at wedding dresses all day long!), but it did, and it wouldn’t have happened without Modern Trousseau. In a couple of months I will go back to Connecticut for my muslin fitting – this means that a “mock-up” of my dress will be created (without the final fabrics) so that we can make any necessary adjustments or changes before the final gown is made. The amazing thing? This option is available to ALL brides – not just bridal store owners and not just brides making custom gowns. Any of our brides can choose to have a muslin fitting if they’d like. And all of our brides are welcome to go to Modern Trousseau to have their alterations done (which we highly suggest!)
While there are so many amazing things about the experience, one of the things I love the most is that I now have experience, as a bride, at the Modern Trousseau headquarters. As many of our brides know, we suggest all of our brides take the trip to Woodbridge to get their alterations done, and now I can provide a new level of comfort by letting you know that I did it, too. I’m going through this experience with you all!
I am so thankful to the team at Modern Trousseau for this experience and for being amazing people, and I’m so lucky, honored and excited that I get to wear Modern Trousseau on my wedding day. I can’t wait for you all to see my gown! (I can’t wait to see my gown, either, if I’m being honest…!)
If you ever have any questions for me – about wedding gowns or anything else – please feel free to reach out to me! We pride ourselves on providing an amazing experience from start to finish, and we’re happy to help in any way possible with any and all wedding-related questions. I look forward to hearing from you soon!
PS – My mom got her dress custom made during the appointment, as well, so for all of you mother-of-the-brides and mother-of-the-grooms reading, you can make an appointment with them for a beautiful gown, as well!
